Gyudon (beef bowl)

Gyudon (beef bowl)

This dish is amazing. I am very picky with my food and even though people say that I’m a great cook  it’s not so easy for me to like all recipes and dishes that I make. BUT THIS ONE IS BOMB, trust me! Yes, maybe in the prettiest food contest this baby would not win any prize, but as we know, appearance can be misleading.

Gyudon basically means beef bowl (“gyu” translates to cow, or in this case beef, and “don” is shortage for donburi, that means rice bowl). This dish can be found all over Japan and there are many fast chain restaurants that make it. Basically, gyudon is Japanese fast food.

This recipe is easy and quick, perfect when you don’t want to spend too much time in the kitchen.

Ingredients for 3-4 portions:

  • 1 onion
  • ~340 thinly sliced good quality beef* (I used mature sirloin steak)
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp neutral taste oil (I used sunflower)
  • 2 M size eggs
  • 2 green onions (to serve)
  • pickled ginger (to serve)
  • steamed short-grain rice (to serve)

For the sauce:

  • 2 tsp brown sugar
  • 3 tbsp sake
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  1. Cut onion into thin slices.
  2. Heat an oil in a frying pan on medium high heat. Once it is heated, add onions and cook it until it softens.
  3. Add thinly sliced meat and sugar  to onions and cook it until the red colour disappears.
  4. Add sauce ingredients to the pan and let it simmer for a few minutes.
  5. At the end add beaten eggs and stir it for a minute or 2.
  6. Serve on top of steamed short-grain rice with green onions and pickled ginger.

Meshiagare!

*To cut the beef into thin slices add meat to the freezer for half an hour.
